An auto accident on College and Durant

UC Berkeley – January 2013

A while back there was an unexpected intrusion onto our lawn in front of Theta Delta Chi in UC Berkeley. An unidentified driver (not a fraternity member or student, we think) lost control of their vehicle as they sped up Durant Avenue. They lost control of the car and ran up the curb, flattening a parking meter, cruising through our hedges, and ending up in the motorcycle parking lot by our house–on College. Our location on the corner of College and Durant Avenues is great for people watching, sunning, or playing catch on the lawn. Perfect for tailgate parties too. But also subject to bad drivers.

Essentially they ran their car through our hedges and left skid marks on our beautiful greenery! They also knocked over a tree in the sidewalk planter. Fortunately the tree didn’t die, we just stood it back up and the tree survives to this day.  The parking meters didn’t survive, but Berkeley replaced the meters. Note the excited onlookers in the background, who seemed to narrate the scenario.

Fortunately, it all grows back. Even the hedge plants.
