Replace The Hut Wall
We’re Going to Fix This!
Delta Deut alumnus are proud of our stately Charge house–home to UC Berkeley Theta Delts for over 100 years. But there’s an eye sore we want to fix. The crumbling Hut wall that faces College Ave. is an embarrassment that we need to fix! This cracked wall, built quickly in the late 1940’s, is suffering the effects of time, seismic activity, and tree roots. This problem is not caused by any kind of irresponsible behaviors or neglect. It’s merely decline due to deferred maintenance.

Proud History
Our fraternity house is a UC Berkeley landmark that is much admired by visitors and anyone passing by the corner of College and Durant. The house is famously a location in the 1969 move The Graduate, and is locally nicknamed ‘the Chia House’ due to the ivy covered walls. We’re proud of the structure, built in 1916 for Theta Delta Chi by the new Delta Deuteron Building Association.
Join Us!
Join the Delta Deuteron Building Association in replacing this ugly and unsafe wall and dirt lot. We’re working on a plan that would both replace the wall and create new parking spaces.
Plan Overview
Our initial concept is to replace the wall and develop new parking spaces. To make this happen we’d move the wall back into the courtyard to allow sufficient space in order to conform to building code requirements. This image shows the existing wall in red, and and in blue we show an approximate alignment of the new wall.

Design Options
We’re weighing options.
We can replace the wall with a design similar to the existing one: concrete blocks with stucco surface and brick pillars. Cost is a consideration. Some BA Board Members think a massive wood wall makes more sense.
- Attractive gate entry (location TBA)
- New wall matches current height for security/privacy
- Large wood beams & timbers v.s. current stucco & brick
- ADA ramp (to code) and water drainage solutions
You can chime in on your favorite approach. I like the idea of naming the gate entry for a famous Delta Deut. Who would you name?
Why Add Parking?
Parking a Competitive Advantage
The Undergrads find the idea of added (legal) parking spaces is desirable because guys want parking and other fraternities have parking but we don’t.
- Rush marketing benefit for students who need a car
- Easier logistics for vendors, contractors, house Stewart and Cook
- Premium alumni parking spaces for Game Day events
- ADA compliant parking (per code)
